Google Ads for Shopify: Connect, Track and Launch the Right Way
How to run Google Ads for a Shopify store: link the Google & YouTube app, sync Merchant Center, set up tracking without double counting, and launch.

To run Google Ads for a Shopify store, install Shopify's Google & YouTube app, link Merchant Center so your products sync, link Google Ads so the app sets up conversion tracking, then build your campaigns inside Google Ads. That is the whole integration. The hard part is not connecting it. It is keeping the tracking clean and the budget on products that make money.
This guide walks through each step, the one mistake that breaks most Shopify accounts, and what to launch first.
How Google Ads and Shopify fit together
Three Google tools sit behind Google Ads for Shopify:
| Tool | What it does for your store |
|---|---|
| Google & YouTube app (in Shopify) | Connects your store to Google: product sync, tags and conversion events |
| Merchant Center | Holds your product feed, which powers Shopping ads and free listings |
| Google Ads | Where you build campaigns, set budgets and read results |
The app's App Store listing describes it as a way to "sync your products, deals, and shipping to Merchant Center" and run Performance Max ads. It is free to install. The listing says additional charges may apply, and when you run a campaign, "the ad spend is billed directly to your Google Ads account."
Step 1: install the Google & YouTube app
- In Shopify admin, search for "Google & YouTube".
- Open it in the Shopify App Store and select Install.
- Review the permissions and confirm.
- Select Connect Google account and pick the Google account you will use for Merchant Center and Google Ads.
Use one Google account that has admin access to everything. Google's help page says the email you link must be the one that manages Merchant Center, with admin rights there.
Step 2: link Merchant Center and sync your products
From the app, link an existing Merchant Center account or create a new one. Google recommends using an existing account if it is already active and performing.
Google's checklist before your store is verified:
- A valid payment method.
- An online store with no password protection.
- A refund policy and terms of service on the store.
- Contact details on the store.
- A phone number you can verify.
- Your target country, language, shipping settings and checkout link settings.
Two limits to know. The app links to a stand-alone Merchant Center account, and Google says Multi-Client Accounts (MCA) are not eligible for linking. And Merchant Center reviews your site, so missing policies are a common reason products get held back. More on how Merchant Center works.
Once linked, your Shopify products sync to Merchant Center. Check the products tab in Merchant Center for anything marked as needing attention before you build a campaign.
Step 3: link Google Ads
From the app's Overview page, find the Google Ads card, select Get started, then Connect. Google lists two requirements: the app is installed, and Merchant Center is already linked, because "Shopping and Performance Max campaigns require an active product feed to function." Your Google email also needs admin rights on the Google Ads account.
Step 4: set up Shopify conversion tracking, once
When you connect Google Ads, the app shows a list of Shopify events under Measure conversions. Google's help pages say what happens next:
- A purchase conversion action is created and set as primary, and as the account default.
- Add to cart, begin checkout, page view, view item, search and add payment info are created as secondary. Google says secondary actions are for observation only and do not affect bidding.
- You are asked to confirm enhanced conversions.
Then do the step most stores skip. Remove your old Google Ads tags. Google's migration guide says to "remove legacy tags to prevent duplicate measurement", and to check you do not have the same conversion in the app and in your storefront or a custom pixel.
If a purchase fires from the app and from an old theme tag, both set as primary, every sale counts twice. Smart Bidding then thinks your ads work twice as well as they do and spends to match. Our Google Ads conversion tracking guide shows how to check for it.
One more limit: the app links one Google Ads account directly. If you use a manager account, or want a second account, Google says to add it manually with conversion IDs and labels or Google tags.
Step 5: launch your first campaign
The app can create a Performance Max campaign for you. It works, but you get more control building it in Google Ads, where you can see search terms, set product groups and split budgets.
What to launch first:
- One Shopping or Performance Max campaign on your best sellers. Not the whole catalog on day one.
- One brand Search campaign on your store name. It is cheap, and it stops rivals from taking your name.
- Nothing else until the first campaign shows which products sell at a profit.
Why so few? A small budget split across five campaigns gives each one too little data to learn. One campaign at $30 a day learns faster than three at $10. Our guide to Google Ads for ecommerce covers the full build order and bidding on profit. For how Performance Max decides where to spend, read the explainer.
Shopify Google Ads integration extras worth turning on
- Free listings. Merchant Center opts new accounts in by default. Google says eligible products can show at no cost on Search, the Shopping tab, Images, Lens, YouTube, Maps and Gemini.
- Customer Match through Data Manager. In Google Ads, under Tools and Data Manager, you can connect Shopify as a data source. Google says Customer Match turns on automatically once connected, and you can import up to 25 audience lists at once.
- Google Analytics. The app can connect it too, which helps you see the full path from click to order.
The Shopify Google Ads mistakes we see most
Double-counted purchases. Covered above. Check it first.
Product titles written for the store, not for search. "The Wanderer" means nothing to Google. "Men's Leather Hiking Boot - Waterproof - Brown" matches searches. Your feed titles are your keywords.
A whole catalog on one budget. Best sellers get starved while products that never sell eat the spend. Split by margin or by sales history.
Changing the campaign every day. Google says Smart Bidding needs a 7 to 14 day learning phase, and frequent changes to budgets or targets reset it.
No refund policy or contact page. Merchant Center asks for both. Missing them can hold your products back before you spend a cent.
Google Ads Dropshipping on Shopify
Most dropshipping stores run on Shopify, and the setup above is the same. What changes is Merchant Center risk and margin. Shipping times, returns and business details get more scrutiny, and thin margins mean a higher break-even ROAS. Our Google Ads Dropshipping hub covers the stricter setup and the common suspension fixes.
Getting help with the weekly work
Once the store is connected, results come from weekly work: search terms, negatives, products that spend with no sales, budgets. Our page for Shopify brands shows how Scaley fits a Shopify store. Scaley Media Buyer connects to Google Ads read-only and answers questions from your live account, like "which products spent money with no sales". Scaley Suite connects Google Ads and Shopify, suggests changes, and makes each one only after you say yes to it.
