What Is Performance Max in Google Ads?

Answered 20 August 2026 · Updated 8 October 2026 · Written and reviewed by Christopher Krassnig

The Short Answer

Performance Max is a Google Ads campaign type that spends one budget across YouTube, Display, Search, Discover, Gmail and Maps from a single campaign. You give it a goal, assets, audience signals and your product feed, and Google picks every placement. Scaley Suite, which we build, proposes fixes and waits for an individual yes.

What Is a Performance Max Campaign?

Performance Max, or PMax for short, is a campaign type in Google Ads. Google's own words: it is "a goal-based campaign type" that lets you reach all of your Google Ads inventory from one campaign. That means YouTube, Display, Search, Discover, Gmail and Maps.

You give the campaign a budget. You give it a goal, like online sales. You give it your product feed, or a set of assets, plus an audience signal. Google then decides which of its surfaces each cent goes to. It also picks which product or asset to show, one auction at a time. There are no keywords to add. There are no per-channel budgets to split.

PMax replaced Smart Shopping campaigns. That is why most ecom accounts run one, whether they chose it or not. If your store sells physical products, a PMax campaign is often the one spending the most money in the account.

How Does Performance Max Work?

You hand Performance Max four things: a goal, a budget, your assets and your audience signals. Assets live in an asset group. Google calls that "a collection of creatives centered on a theme or target audience". Google Ads uses those assets to build the ads. If you sell products, your Merchant Center feed goes in too. Google says that with a feed you do not even need creative assets to launch.

Google keeps everything else. Which surface each cent goes to. Which product or asset shows. Which auction to enter, at what price. That is the trade. You give up control over the split. You get reach. You get one report at the end.

The bidding is Smart Bidding, set to the goal you picked. Chase conversions, or chase conversion value, with an optional target CPA or target ROAS on top. So the campaign is only as smart as your conversion tracking. Feed it a double-counted sale and it will chase that wrong number with real money.

Do Audience Signals Target People?

No, and this is the part people get wrong. Google's help page says its AI is enhanced when you add audience signals to a Performance Max campaign. Google also says the campaign may show ads to people outside your signals when they are likely to convert.

So treat a signal as a starting hint. You are telling Google where to look first. You are not building a wall around who can see the ad. If you need a real fence, it has to come from the things you can truly control: which products are in the campaign, your exclusions, your locations and your budget.

Performance Max vs Search, Shopping and Demand Gen

Search campaigns still matter next to PMax. Google says Search campaigns with an exact match keyword are prioritized over Performance Max when a search matches that exact keyword. So a tight Search campaign on your best terms keeps those searches in your hands.

Standard Shopping gives you more control than PMax. You choose the products and the bids, and the ads stay on Shopping placements. PMax can use the same feed on every surface. Running both on the same products does not make you bid against yourself. Google sends only one of your campaigns into each auction, the one with the highest Ad Rank. The cost is control: you no longer choose which campaign, bid or budget serves that product. So check which campaign really served your top sellers.

Demand Gen is the other close cousin. Google describes it as a campaign for YouTube (including Shorts), Discover, Gmail, Maps and the Display Network. Google's own comparison says Demand Gen gives "more control over creative testing, audience targeting, and specific placements", while PMax has "no hard targeting" and steers across every channel. Pick Demand Gen when you want to test creative on visual surfaces. Pick PMax when you want one budget chasing sales everywhere.

What Assets Does Performance Max Need?

Google publishes the specs, and they change, so check the help page before a big upload. As of October 2026 it lists up to 15 headlines of 30 characters each, with at least one of 15 characters or less. Up to 5 long headlines of 90 characters. Up to 5 descriptions of 90 characters. A business name of up to 25 characters.

For images it asks for landscape at 1.91:1 (1200 x 628 recommended), square at 1:1 (1200 x 1200 recommended) and portrait at 4:5 (960 x 1200 recommended), up to 20 images, 5120 KB max each. A square logo at 1200 x 1200 is recommended. Videos should be 10 seconds or more, ideally one horizontal, one square and one vertical.

For a store with a feed, the feed is the asset that matters most. Product titles, images and prices decide what PMax can show on Shopping placements. Text and image assets fill the other surfaces.

Where Performance Max Hides Waste

One budget covers every surface, so you get one blended result. A campaign can sit at a comfortable ROAS while Display and video quietly spend the return that Shopping earned. Google now offers channel performance and placement reports for PMax. Read them. They are the closest you get to seeing which surface earned what.

The fixes all sit outside the black box. Feed quality decides what Shopping is even allowed to show. Brand exclusions and negative keywords stop you paying for searches you would have won for free, or never wanted. Margin decides which products deserve budget at all. Google does not know what any product makes you unless you tell it.

How Scaley Handles a PMax Account

We build Scaley, so weigh this part. Scaley Suite works on the levers that sit outside the blend. It sorts every product by margin and how fast it sells, and pushes those tags into Merchant Center custom labels, so a campaign can bid on profit. It also names the searches and placements worth excluding. Each proposal carries its reason, and nothing moves until you say yes to it. Scaley Media Buyer only reads the account and answers your questions. It cannot change a setting.

A human still wins some jobs. Choosing the hero products. Arguing the offer. Deciding whether PMax should run at all this quarter. That is a senior buyer or ZenoX Media. And if you have an in-house PPC team that wants a rules workbench to drive itself, Optmyzr is the better pick. Scaley has no rule builder and no script library.
