What Is Automated PPC?
Answered 20 August 2026 · Written and reviewed by Chris Krassnig
Automated PPC is any part of a paid search account run by software instead of a person: bidding, budgets, negative keywords, reporting and alerts. Some of it is built into Google Ads and free. Scaley AI automates the watching and the preparing, then waits for your approval before anything goes live. We build Scaley, so weigh that.
Layer One: The Automation Google Gives You Free
Most accounts are already automated and the owner has not noticed. Smart Bidding sets a bid in every auction, which Google calls "auction-time bidding", using signals like device, city, day of week and the text of the search. Performance Max decides which of Google's surfaces each cent goes to. Automated rules and scripts can pause, adjust and report on a schedule.
None of that costs extra. On a small account with clean conversion tracking it is often all the automation you need, and any tool that cannot beat it is not worth a subscription. Start here before you buy anything.
Layer Two and Three: Workbenches and Watchers
The second layer is the rules workbench. You write the logic, the tool runs it on a schedule across every account. Optmyzr's own pricing page describes this as "Rule Engine-Based Custom Optimizations and Insights", offered across its Essentials, Premium and Enterprise plans, and lists the cadences on the top plan as "Rule Engine Automations: Hourly* / Daily / Weekly / Monthly / Annually*". If you have an in-house PPC team that wants to build and own its own logic, that is the shape you want.
The third layer is newer: software that watches the account continuously, works out what it would change, and hands you the proposal with the reasoning. Nothing fires on a rule. Nothing fires without a person. This is where Scaley sits, and it is a genuinely different product from a rules engine, not a better one.
What Should Never Run Unattended
Three things, from watching real accounts break.
Big budget moves. A rule that doubles spend on a two-day trend is how a month's margin disappears over a bank holiday. Structure changes too: nothing should be renaming campaigns or rebuilding ad groups while you sleep.
Brand exclusions. Automated negative keyword mining will eventually propose excluding a term that looks wasteful and is actually your own brand plus a modifier. Cheap to approve, expensive to discover three weeks later.
Anything you cannot undo in one click. If the log does not say what changed and why, it is not automation, it is a black box.
Scaley AI is built around that line. The first audit is read-only: it scans 90 days without touching a single setting. After that it tags every SKU by margin and velocity and syncs those tags to your Merchant Center custom labels. It surfaces every bad search term, placement and loss-making product, with the evidence attached, and proposes scaling moves with the reason next to each one. You approve them one at a time, and every change is logged and reversible. We build Scaley, so weigh that. The receipts belong to ZenoX Media, our sister Google Ads agency, rated 4.8 from 38 verified client reviews on Trustpilot. Agency reviews, not Scaley product reviews.
Who should not buy us. An account small enough that Google's free automation already covers it. A team that wants to build and own its own rules, which is Optmyzr's job, not ours. And anyone running pure lead gen with no product catalogue, because the Labelizer has nothing to tag. That last one is on our own pricing page.
