Should I Turn on Auto-Apply Recommendations in Google Ads?
Answered 15 October 2026 · Written and reviewed by Christopher Krassnig
Turn on auto-apply only for the kinds of recommendation you would accept every time without reading them. Leave budget and bidding ones off. Applied recommendations raise Google's 0 to 100% optimization score, which measures setup, not profit. Scaley Suite, which we build at ZenoX Media, takes the other road: each change waits for your yes.
What Auto-Apply Does
Auto-apply is a switch in the Recommendations page. Google's own words: "When you turn on 'Automatically apply recommendations', the recommendations will apply regularly."
You pick which kinds of recommendation it covers. Google says you can see what will run on a given day in a queue, dismiss the ones that do not fit, and turn the feature off at any time.
So it is not all or nothing. The real question is which kinds you trust enough to stop reading.
Which Kinds to Leave Off
Leave off anything that moves money. Budget raises and bid strategy switches change how much you spend, and only you know if the extra spend lands on a product with margin.
Be careful with anything that widens who sees your ads, like broader keywords. More reach is not the same as more sales.
The score is the trap. Google's optimization score runs from 0 to 100%, and applying recommendations raises it. A high score tells you the account follows Google's suggestions. It does not tell you the account makes money.
The Other Way to Do It
If reading every recommendation sounds like too much, a middle road exists: something reads them for you and you still decide.
Scaley Suite works that way. It reads the account every day, writes each change down with the reason, and stops. Only the Scaley Suite writes to an account, and only after an individual yes from you. That covers its own budget raise proposals too. It costs $199/mo + 4% of total ad spend.
If you have a small account and a few spare minutes a week, reading the Recommendations page yourself costs nothing and works fine.
