Remarketing in Google Ads shows ads to people who already visited your website or app. Google now calls these lists "your data" segments. A store can reach past visitors on Display, show them the exact products they viewed, or bid more when they search again. Search lists need at least 1,000 people first.
Also called: retargeting, your data segments, RLSA (remarketing lists for search ads)
How Remarketing Works in Google Ads
You add a Google tag to your site. When someone visits, the tag adds them to a list. Then you tell a campaign to show ads to that list, or to bid differently for it.
Google renamed it. Its help pages say "remarketing" is now referred to as "your data". The idea did not change: re-engage people who "have previously interacted with your brand or services".
Google says these segments can reach people "as they browse over 2 million websites and mobile apps."
The Three Kinds That Matter for a Store
Google lists several ways to use your data. These three do most of the work for ecom.
| Kind | What it does | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Website visitors | Shows ads to past visitors as they browse sites and apps on the Display Network. | The Google tag on every page and a website visitor list. |
| Dynamic remarketing | Shows visitors ads with the products they viewed on your site. | A product feed in Merchant Center, plus the dynamic remarketing tag with custom parameters on every page. |
| Remarketing for Search ads | Changes your bids or ads when past visitors search on Google again. | A visitor list with at least 1,000 people before it can be used. |
Remarketing Lists for Search Ads
This is the one most stores forget. Google says there are two basic ways to use it. You can raise or lower bids on your normal keywords for past visitors. Google's own example is a 25% higher bid for people who visited in the last 30 days. Or you can bid on broader keywords only for past visitors or past buyers.
Two limits to know. A list "needs to have a minimum number of 1,000 cookies before the segment can be used" for Search ads. And membership "is capped at 540 days".
Dynamic Remarketing for Online Stores
Dynamic remarketing is regular remarketing plus your product feed. Google says it shows "previous visitors ads that contain products and services they viewed on your site".
Retailers upload the feed to Google Merchant Center. The tag records which product IDs each visitor looked at, and Google builds the ad from your feed. That is why your feed's IDs must match the IDs the tag sends. If they do not match, the ads show the wrong products or none at all. Our product feed answer covers the feed side.
Example: A Shoe Store Sets Up Three Lists
Made-up numbers, to show the method. A shoe store gets about 40,000 visitors a month and has the Google tag on every page.
It builds three lists: all visitors in the last 30 days, people who added to cart but did not buy in the last 14 days, and buyers in the last 180 days.
It runs dynamic remarketing on Display to the cart list, so each person sees the shoes they left. It adds the all-visitors list to its Search campaigns with a bid increase, because those people already know the brand. And it excludes the buyers list from both, so it stops paying to sell to people who just bought.
Common Mistakes
No exclusions for recent buyers
Without a buyer exclusion, you keep paying to show the same shoes to someone who bought them yesterday.
Feed IDs that do not match the tag
Dynamic remarketing pulls products by ID. If the tag and the feed use different IDs, the ads break.
Expecting Search remarketing on a small list
A list needs at least 1,000 people before Google lets you use it for Search ads.
Showing the same ad forever
Remarketing audiences see you often. Use a frequency cap on Display and change the creative.
