How Do I See Search Terms in Performance Max?

Answered 3 November 2026 · Written and reviewed by

The Short Answer

To see search terms in Performance Max, open the Campaigns menu, then Search terms, and from the dropdown choose "Search terms and landing pages for Performance Max". Searches with too little volume stay hidden for privacy. Scaley Media Buyer, which we build, reads the same data read-only and, when you ask, shows which terms waste money.

Where PMax Search Terms Live Now

For a long time Performance Max only showed you search categories, not the real words people typed. Google's own help page says PMax now gets "the same granular Search term data and capabilities previously only available in Search and Shopping campaigns".

So you get the real searches, with clicks, cost and conversions for each one. The data goes back to March 2023. Anything older does not show.

Two other views help too. Search terms insights groups your searches into themes and counts the ones the report hides. The channel performance report splits PMax spend by where the ads ran, like Search, Shopping, YouTube and Display. The steps below walk through the report first, because that is where you decide what to block.

How to See and Use PMax Search Terms, Step by Step

The click path Google Ads Help gives in 2026, then what to do with the terms once you see them.

  1. 1

    Open the search terms report

In Google Ads, open the Campaigns menu, then Search terms.

  2. 2

Switch to the Performance Max view

From the dropdown menu, choose the view "Search terms and landing pages for Performance Max". Then choose your PMax campaign and set the date range to the last 30 days. Data before March 2023 does not show.

  3. 3

    Split Shopping from text ads

Segment the report by ad format. Google splits it into Shopping ads and Text ads, so you can see which searches pulled up a product and which pulled up a text ad. This view also shows the landing page each search sent people to.

  4. 4

Sort by cost and read the conversions

Sort by cost, highest first. Look at conversions and conversion value, not clicks. A term that spent real money with zero sales is the one to question. A term that sells well is one to keep, and a good line for a new headline asset.

  5. 5

Block the losers as negative keywords

Open Campaigns, then Keywords, then the Negative keywords tab. Click the plus button, choose your Performance Max campaign, and add one term per line. Our answer on PMax negative keywords covers the limits, lists and account-level setup.

  6. 6

Check search terms insights for what is hidden

Open search terms insights for the same campaign. It groups the last 56 days of searches into themes and counts the low-volume ones the report hides. Use the source column to see if a search came from PMax's own targeting or from the search themes you added.

What Google Still Hides

The report leaves some searches out. Know the gaps before you trust the totals. If the rows add up to less than the campaign spend, this is usually why.

What the Performance Max search terms report leaves out, and where to look instead, per Google Ads Help
What is missingWhyWhere to look instead
Low-volume searchesGoogle leaves out terms that too few people typed, for privacySearch terms insights, which counts every search inside its themes
YouTube and Display spendThose ads run on placements and content, not on a typed searchThe channel performance report
Store visits and store salesGoogle says these conversions do not work with the search terms reportCampaign-level conversion columns
Anything before March 2023PMax search term data starts in March 2023Nowhere. Google does not show it
Insights older than 56 daysSearch terms insights only reads the last 56 daysThe search terms report, with a longer date range

One more trap. A search term with clicks and no sales is not always waste. Google itself tells you to judge PMax terms on conversions first, not clicks or impressions, because some conversions happen without a direct click. Give a term enough spend before you call it.

How to Spot the Search Terms That Waste Money

Sort the report by cost, highest first. Then read the top rows like a buyer would (I start with about 30, my rule of thumb). For each term ask one question: would a person typing this buy my product, at my price, today?

On store accounts, the losers tend to look the same. Words like "free", "cheap", "DIY", "how to", "used" and "repair". Other brands' names. The wrong product type, like "dog crate" when you sell dog beds. And searches for jobs, wholesale or a supplier, when you sell to shoppers.

Then do the money check. Say your target cost per sale is $30 (a made-up number, to show the math). A term that spent $45 with zero sales has had more than enough room. Block it. A term that spent $8 with zero sales has not had a fair shot yet. Leave it and look again in a week.

Watch your own brand name too. If PMax spends a lot on people searching your store by name, many of those buyers were coming anyway, and the ROAS looks better than it is. Google lets you add a brand exclusion for that.

After you block terms, keep an eye on volume. Google warns that too many exclusions can limit your reach. Block the clear losers, not everything you do not like the look of.

Should You Check It by Hand or Let Scaley Read It

Doing it yourself is free and works fine. On a small account, a short weekly check in the report does the job. I check it weekly. If you want the raw data in a sheet, the Google Ads API serves PMax search terms through a view called campaign_search_term_view, so a script or a reporting tool can pull it. Rule tools like Adalysis also sell PMax tools that watch search terms and flag ones to add as negatives. If you are an agency running many accounts, I would point you there.

Scaley Media Buyer ($99/mo + 1% of total ad spend) is the one we build, so weigh that. It connects to Google Ads read-only. You ask "which Performance Max searches are wasting money?" and it reads your live search term data and shows you the waste right away, term by term, with the cost behind each one. It never changes a setting and never runs on its own. You add the negatives yourself. Only the Scaley Suite writes to an account, and only after an individual yes from you.

Scaley comes in two other levels. Scaley Consultant ($99/mo flat) reads a CSV or screenshot of the report you upload and connects to nothing. Scaley Suite ($199/mo + 4% of total ad spend) finds the dead terms and queues each negative keyword with the reason. Nothing goes live until you say yes to that one change. Every level starts with a 3-day free trial, card required.

ZenoX Media, my Google Ads agency, has run 400+ store accounts. If you want a person to run the whole account for you, that is what the agency does.

Common Questions

Why do my PMax search terms add up to less than my spend?

Google hides searches with too little volume, for privacy. Spend on YouTube and Display has no search term at all. And store visit and store sale conversions are not in this report. Search terms insights and the channel performance report fill most of that gap.

Can I add negative keywords to Performance Max?

Yes, at campaign level or account level. They only block Search and Shopping ads, not YouTube or Display. Our answer on PMax negative keywords walks through the full setup.

What is the difference between the search terms report and search terms insights?

The report shows the exact words people typed, with cost and conversions for each one, but it leaves out low-volume searches. Insights shows themes instead of exact words, covers only the last 56 days, and does count the hidden searches. Use the report to block terms and the insights to see the shape of the traffic.

Why can't I see any search terms for my Performance Max campaign?

Check three things. You picked the "Search terms and landing pages for Performance Max" view, not the normal one. The date range is after March 2023. And the campaign has had enough Search and Shopping traffic. A new campaign, or one that spends mostly on YouTube and Display, can show very few rows at first.
