How Are Shopping Ads Created?
Answered 20 August 2026 · Written and reviewed by Chris Krassnig
Shopping ads are built by Google from your product feed, not written by hand. You send product data to Merchant Center and link it to Google Ads. Scaley AI tags every SKU by margin and velocity and syncs those labels daily, then waits for your approval before anything changes. We build Scaley, so weigh that.
Google Builds the Ad, You Build the Feed
A Shopping ad is assembled, not written. Google takes the product data you send to Merchant Center - title, image, price, availability, brand, GTIN - and renders the listing from it. There is no headline box to fill in and no description to test. Change the feed and the ad changes.
That is why feed work is the real ad work in Shopping. A title like "Blue Running Shoes Mens Size 10 Lightweight" matches far more of what people type than "Aero X1". Same shoe, same price, completely different reach.
What You Set, and What Google Decides
You control the feed, the budget, the bidding goal, and which products are allowed to compete. Google controls which product shows for which search, on which surface, at what moment. There are no keywords in a Shopping campaign. Your product titles and attributes are the keywords.
So the levers that actually move a Shopping account are feed quality, how complete your product data is, and which products you let in. Bid strategy comes after all three, not before. An account with a messy feed and a clever bid strategy still loses to a clean feed on defaults.
Where Scaley Fits, and Where It Does Not
Scaley AI works on the labels, not on the feed itself. It tags every SKU by margin and velocity and pushes those tags into Merchant Center custom labels every day. It also surfaces the search terms and products quietly burning budget, with the evidence attached. It watches 24/7 and prepares the change, and it writes nothing to your account until you approve it. We build Scaley, so weigh that.
What it does not do is watch your disapprovals. Merchant Center raises those itself, on Google's screen, and clearing them is step three above. No software of ours sits between you and that list.
Where software is the wrong answer: if the product data is broken at the source, inside your store, a person has to fix it there. And on a catalogue of a few dozen SKUs, an operator rewriting titles by hand for an afternoon will beat any tool. Software earns its keep when there are too many products to hold in your head.
And if what you need is a feed management platform - one place to remap and rewrite product attributes for every channel you sell on - buy one of those instead. DataFeedWatch calls itself a data feed management platform and says it connects to more than 2,000 channels and marketplaces. We do labels and exclusions on top of a feed. We are not trying to be the feed tool.
How a Shopping Ad Gets Created, Step by Step
Five steps from raw product data to a listing people can click. Nothing here is optional.
- 1
Get the Product Data Out of Your Store
Your store produces a feed: product titles, images, prices, availability, brand and GTIN. Shopify, WooCommerce and most carts generate it for you or through an app.
- 2
Send the Feed to Merchant Center
Open a Google Merchant Center account, add your website, verify and claim it, then connect the feed so Google can read your whole catalogue.
- 3
Clear Every Disapproval
Merchant Center flags the products it refuses to show: missing GTIN, a price that does not match the landing page, no shipping set up. A disapproved product can never appear in an ad.
- 4
Link Merchant Center to Google Ads
Link the two accounts from Merchant Center. Without that link, Google Ads cannot see a single one of your products.
- 5
Create the Campaign and Set the Goal
Build a Shopping or Performance Max campaign, choose which products are in it, set the daily budget and the bidding goal. Google then assembles each ad from the feed.
